As
a result, politicians are increasingly seen as impotent, irrelevant
and dishonest. People are simply losing faith in politics. According
to polls in the UK, the percentage of of the electorate who had
'great confidence' or 'quite a lot of confidence' in parliament
has dropped from 54% to 10% between 1983 and 1996. People are
abandoning the ballot box, how meaningful is democracy if only
half the people bother to vote, (just 59% in 2001 General Election).
What is the worth of representation if our politicians jump to
the commands of corporations rather than that of their own constituents?
Politicians, desperate
to woo those who will vote and to re-assert their legitimacy are
turning to business to provide them with the tools. Pollsters,
image consultants and advertising specialists seem like a better
solution than actually addressing issues. Gallup polling since
1991 has consistently shown that people see the most urgent problems
facing the UK as Health, Education, the Cost of Living, Unemployment
and the Environment. Issues that require taxation or the control
of business to address them. Meaning therefore, that they do not
get addressed, unless of course it is to privatise or discard
them to please 'the Market', (read Corporate Power). Using euphemisms
such as 'Reducing Red Tape', reducing our Rights, Welfare and
Living Standards, whilst reducing their Operating Costs and Tax
Burden would be more accurate.

A rare example
of real journalism. If more 'journalists' had asked these kinds
of questions and done their research instead of just regurgitating
propaganda, perhaps we could have avoided the Iraq War. It makes
interesting reading, pretty much devastating the 'humanitarian'
argument for war.
