MEDIA POWER

The Media are also central to the growth of this 'Business State' and Globalised World. Owned by the American and European Transnational Media Corporations, they 'manage' the worlds principal sources of news and information, helping to direct the political agenda. They have unprecedented power, they are the new 'King makers'.

They use this power to incessantly repeat politically safe 'news' that is acceptable to the 'Business State'. Distracting us from the real issues by whipping up hysteria and reducing the political debate to nothing more than, 'who can be the toughest' on issues such as migrants, crime and 'terror'. Issues which just happen to involve the reduction of our freedoms and rights. There is media hysteria about 'scroungers' such as asylum seekers and single mothers and the fear, massively exaggerated and re-enforced over and over again, of 'terrorists' around every corner. Meanwhile important issues which affect us every day, such as environmental concerns, civil rights, democratic accountability, state and corporate crimes and the destruction of public welfare and social justice are just ignored or downplayed.

Any attempt to roll back the power of corporations, to salvage democracy, to engage in politics for the betterment of life for the general public or to hold those in power to account are dismissed as 'mad' or 'dangerous', and are destroyed by the rabid onslaught of the mainstream press.

MEDIA: JOHN PILGER INTERVIEWS JAMES RUBIN

A rare example of real journalism. If more 'journalists' had asked these kinds of questions and done their research instead of just regurgitating propaganda, perhaps we could have avoided the Iraq War. It makes interesting reading, pretty much devastating the 'humanitarian' argument for war.

CORPORATE: FEATURED CAMPAIGN
