Consumer
activism is not ideal, we have to rely on high quality information,
(not so forthcoming from the mainstream media...thank god for
the internet), to inform our decisions, and a framework of rights
and regulations to protect the customer from misinformation and
unscrupulous vendors, (which are constantly under attack from
corporate power). Also, because consumer power is market based,
it is effective only where consumers can convince a company that
it is in it's financial interest to comply. Therefore, corporations
that do not sell consumer goods are to a large extent shielded
from activist action. Consumer power also lacks the legitimacy
of 'democracy'. In functioning democratic states, voting is based
on equality, each citizen has an equal opportunity to shape the
political agenda, (we wish!). Consumer activism, however, is biased
towards those with superior resources and spending power. It,
therefore, should not be viewed as a replacement for democratic
accountability, we still need to salvage democracy. But it does
enable us to directly exercise power through bringing pressure
to bear on corporations in a way that is increasingly denied to
us through 'democratic' political channels.
Power
To The People will provide you with a host of links which
will enable you to get the facts on companies and get involved
in consumer boycotts and protests to exert that power.
In
addition to boycotting or buying from an ethical point of view.
You can also exert pressure by asking the right questions. By
making store managers and corporate officers aware that you have
concerns, you encourage them to take action. Does their company
guarantee products being sold are made under humane conditions?
Can you get a list of the names and addresses of contractors and
subcontractors? Does the company have a code of conduct? Can you
have a copy? etc. Even if you do not intend or are unable to take
it any further, the company is pressured, it may make good any
claims made or perhaps look into the behaviour of their subcontractors
to ensure no negative publicity will come back from their involvement
with them. Corporate fear of negative publicity can be a very
powerful ally.
