In this new Globalised world it is the 'masses' that fair worst. As a workforce, we are effectively easily replaceable commodities. Those who were already earning low wages are earning even less. We have less economic and political clout thanks to the smashing of the unions and increased low cost manufacturing (and now services) abroad. Where, thanks to globalisation, corporations can produce with no restraints, worker's rights, environmental protection and tax requirements are virtually non existent. Unelected institutions such as the World Bank, WTO and IMF, with the support of our government, are enforcing and encouraging these 'corporate friendly' policies throughout the world. As the 'Global South', (South & SE Asia, South America & Africa), is pillaged by globalised corporate power, the pressures are felt here to reduce our 'barriers to trade', (another euphemism for our rights, living standards etc), in order to compete.

As a result, job security and worker's rights have all but disappeared in the UK. Globalisation has led our government to adopt more 'flexible labour' policies, effectively absolving employers of long term commitment to their employees and their community. For example, it is now perfectly legal for you to be made redundant with no reason or notice and by text message, and then be advised your company pension has vanished. This whilst the 'social safety net' of public welfare is fast disappearing, thanks to a shrinking tax base (corporation tax has plummeted since 1979) and media and government driven hysteria regarding 'scroungers'.
